On December 11th, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage decided in Bogota to add five more elements to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. One of them is alpinism.
The application was submitted by mountaineering organizations and national guide associations from three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland.
When handing in their dossier, the countries had namely highlighted the following: “Knowledge about the natural environment, changing weather conditions, and natural hazards is also essential. Alpinism is also based on aesthetic aspects: alpinists strive for elegant climbing motions, contemplation of the landscape, and harmony with the natural environment”.
At Recogn.ice, we very much welcome this official world recognition since we strongly believe that alpinists are key observers and messengers of the cryosphere and the climate change.
